Kevlar goes inside the tire to strengthen the structure where gravel, rock and ruts put more load on it than a highway ever does. That is the honest description. It is not armor, it will not stop a nail, and it does not raise what your truck can tow. Two Wrangler models carry it: the All-Terrain Adventure for mostly-road trucks, the DuraTrac RT for the ones that work harder off it.

What Kevlar Does Inside a Tire
It reinforces the tire, it does not armor it
Kevlar is an aramid fiber with high tensile strength for its weight, added inside a tire that is still built from rubber compounds, steel belts and textile layers. A nail can still reach the air chamber. A sharp rock can still open a sidewall. What the fiber changes is how much repeated flexing and impact the structure absorbs before something gives.
Off-road loading is unpredictable in a way pavement is not
On a highway the casing sees the same cycle over and over. Drop the same truck onto a gravel road and a tread block catches the edge of a rock, the casing twists in a rut, loose stone hammers the tread face. Reinforcement earns its place by tolerating that repeatedly rather than surviving one dramatic hit.
The fiber is one input among several
Tread geometry decides how the tire clears mud. The rubber compound decides how it behaves at 20 degrees. Belt package and sidewall construction decide how much abuse the casing takes. Kevlar contributes strength without adding much weight, and that is the whole of its job.
Two Wrangler models carry it in the current US range
Goodyear puts Kevlar in the Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure and the Wrangler DuraTrac RT. In the DuraTrac RT the fiber specifically helps protect the tread area from damage. Heavy-duty Pro-Grade versions of the All-Terrain Adventure went further, with two layers of Kevlar and roughly 30 percent more steel in the belt package.
The one line to keep: Kevlar is reinforcement, not armor
Running a tire underinflated will destroy it whatever fiber sits inside. So will a rock through the sidewall. Goodyear pairs the aramid with other measures for exactly that reason, which is why the DuraTrac RT also gets three sidewall plies and a Durawall compound rather than relying on the Kevlar by itself.

Most of the mileage happens on pavement for the truck this tire was drawn for, and the rest happens on gravel, dirt, wet asphalt and moderate trail. Biting edges across the tread add grip when the surface turns wet or frozen. Open shoulder blocks and traction ridges let loose material work its way out instead of packing solid between the lugs.
Not a mud-terrain tire. Deep clay wants far larger voids than this pattern has.

Goodyear added this tire to the Wrangler family in September 2023 for drivers who need more than a conventional all-terrain casing survives. Tread depth goes deeper. Aggressive shoulder elements carry on past the tread face toward the outside of the tire, where they add grip and take some of the abrasion on rocky ground. Kevlar sits inside to help protect the tread area.
A heavier, more aggressive tire is quieter nowhere. Interstate-only mileage makes poor use of it.

Yes, when
- Gravel, forest roads or job sites are part of an ordinary week, not a summer trip.
- The sidewall meets rock, curbs or ruts often enough that you have already lost one tire to it.
- The truck tows or hauls and you want a casing that is not working at its limit doing it.
- You want one set of tires to cover snow, rain and dirt without a seasonal swap.
Probably not, when
- The vehicle almost never leaves paved road. A highway-terrain tire is quieter, lighter and cheaper to run.
- You expect the tire to stop punctures. It will not, and no reinforcement on the market does.
- Deep mud is the main job. A dedicated mud-terrain pattern digs harder than either Wrangler here.
- Severe ice and sustained subfreezing driving. A 3PMSF all-terrain tire is not a winter tire.
Value here is easier to judge by what fails than by what a spec sheet promises. Tires on trucks that see gravel rarely wear out first. They come off early because something cut them, and a stronger casing is aimed squarely at that failure rather than at tread life.
Read the warranty as a second signal. The All-Terrain Adventure carries 60,000 miles of limited tread life coverage and the DuraTrac RT 50,000, which is roughly what the difference in tread aggression costs. Both figures are ceilings with eligibility conditions attached, not a promise about your set.
Buying reinforcement you never load is money spent on weight. Skipping it on a truck that keeps shredding tires is money spent twice.

The figures beside each size are the service description. In 113T the 113 is the load index and T the speed rating. Where two numbers appear, as in 121/118R, the first covers single-wheel use and the second dual-wheel use on a truck with four tires on the rear axle.
LT marks light-truck construction and Flotation marks the inch-based sizes such as 35x12.50R20LT, which are also built as LT tires. Load range is left off these cards on purpose, because retailer listings for this range contradict each other. Read it off the sidewall or the tire label instead.
Several sizes come in an outlined white letter version alongside the black sidewall, and the specification is otherwise identical. Availability moves through the year, so a size listed here is not guaranteed to be in stock today.
Getting the Fitment Right
Read 255/70R18 113T from left to right
Take it in pieces. 255 gives the section width in millimeters. The 70 after the slash is a percentage rather than a measurement, putting sidewall height at roughly 70 percent of that width. R stands for radial construction and 18 for an 18-inch rim. Past the size, 113 fixes the maximum load at 2,535 lb per tire and T caps the rated speed at 118 mph.
Load range is a category, not a count of layers
A Load Range E tire described as 10-ply rated does not contain ten physical plies. The phrase survives from older construction and now names a strength and inflation class. Physical construction gets stated separately, which is why the DuraTrac RT advertises a three-ply sidewall at the same time.
An LT tire is not the SL tire in a bigger size
Light-truck construction carries more load and takes more pressure, and it also adds mass, changes ride quality and can dull steering response. Fitting one does not raise what the truck is rated to carry or tow. Payload and axle limits come from the vehicle, and the tire only has to be adequate for them.
The number on the sidewall is not your daily pressure
Maximum inflation pressure is a ceiling for the tire, not a target for the vehicle. Cold pressure starts from the placard in the driver-side door jamb, which accounts for the truck and its intended load. Swap to a substantially different LT specification and the correct figure comes from a load-inflation calculation rather than from copying either number.
Airing down off-road has a floor
Dropping pressure widens the footprint and lets the tire conform to loose or uneven ground. Go too far and the sidewall deflects enough to invite impact damage or unseat the bead. No single off-road psi covers every truck, because rim width, tire construction, vehicle weight, speed and terrain all move the answer. Reinflate before sustained highway speed.
A taller tire changes more than clearance
Overall diameter feeds speedometer accuracy and effective gearing. Extra width can foul suspension or bodywork at full lock. Added mass is unsprung and rotating, so it costs acceleration and braking. Verify clearance through full steering lock and full suspension compression, since a lift alone does not guarantee it.
Two tires wearing the same Wrangler model name can differ in load range, tread depth, maximum pressure, snow certification and weight. Match the full specification rather than the name on the sidewall, and rotate on the interval your vehicle handbook gives, since front and rear axles wear a truck set at different rates.

About Goodyear and Kevlar
Goodyear started in Akron, Ohio, in 1898. Frank and Charley Seiberling began with carriage and bicycle tires, horseshoe pads and assorted rubber goods, and named the company after Charles Goodyear, whose work on natural rubber and sulfur made the material durable enough to manufacture with. Akron is still the head office more than 125 years later.
Wrangler grew into the truck and SUV side of that range. Kevlar reinforcement joined it in 2013 with the All-Terrain Adventure, aimed at owners who wanted a tougher casing without moving to a dedicated off-road tread. September 2023 brought the DuraTrac RT, which pushed the same idea further into rugged-terrain territory.
Kevlar itself is a material brand rather than a tire maker. The aramid has reinforced automotive components for decades, from tires to belts, hoses and friction parts. On 1 April 2026 Arclin completed its purchase of the aramids business from DuPont, taking the Kevlar and Nomex brands with it, so the markings on a specific tire are the reliable guide to current attribution.
Check 3PMSF on the size, not the model
Goodyear shows the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake on the current US pages for both models, and the DuraTrac RT was launched with it. Retailer listings, though, flag the symbol specifically on the All-Terrain Adventure LT sizes, and the 255/70R18 113T standard-load version is not severe-snow rated. Confirm it on the exact size before you order a winter set.
When to replace one
Aramid inside the casing changes nothing about the inspection rules. Exposed cords, a sidewall bulge, separation or damage that cannot be safely repaired all mean the tire comes off. A small puncture in the central tread may be repairable; the same hole near the shoulder or in the sidewall is not treated the same way.
Off-road grip also fades well before the legal minimum tread depth, because the depth is what lets the pattern bite into loose ground and shed snow. Measure at several points around the tire, and read the DOT code for the manufacturing date, since rubber ages whether or not it is used.
